Staff training

We recognise the importance of the training and education of our employees in contributing towards the effectiveness of the council and the service as a whole.

The purpose of training is to assist employees to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to enable them to work competently and efficiently. Training is a continuing process, it can take place at any level in any job, and at any stage of an individual's career. All managers with employee responsibilities have a part to play in the training process. Training also constitutes an investment by the council.

Types of training

The different types of training in which you may become involved are outlined below:

Induction training

Everyone who joins the council or changes jobs will receive induction training. Your induction will cover working practices, how the council functions, Health and Safety, domestic arrangements, fire and emergency procedures.

Depending upon your job, you may need to study for further qualifications and you may be allowed day or block release to enable you to pursue a relevant course. Employees are also encouraged to work for National Vocational Qualifications that can be acquired in the workplace, for example, Administration levels 2 and 3, Customer Service levels 2 and 3.

Skills updates/new technology

Updating your skills training for new technology training generally takes place within your directorate. You may also have the opportunity to attend short courses to update your skills, particularly in I.T. We encourage staff to undertake the European Computer Driving Licence.

Management and supervisory training

This training aims to develop the skills required by managers and supervisors, for example, communication skills, problem solving skills and team building. You may learn some of these skills through external courses or they may be developed in-house.

Professional and occupational updating

If you are a member of a professional body or if you need to ensure that you are up to date with new developments and legislation in your particular field you will be encouraged to fulfil your CPD requirements.

Health and safety training

All employees are required to attend health and safety training as we are committed to ensuring the health, safety and well-being of our staff.
