Clinical waste and syringes

Home > Residents > Waste and recycling > Clinical waste and syringes

Hazardous waste such as syringes, needles, lancets and sharps pose a significant health risk and need to be disposed of safely.

Do not place any syringes, sharps and lancets in any general refuse sacks, recycling containers or rubbish bins - you may not only be risking your own health but that of the operatives that pick up the waste.

Using a special 'yellow sharps box' is the safest way to dispose of hypodermic needles, lancets and sharps. These are available on prescription from your local GP surgery or can be purchased directly from the pharmacy at a small cost. Once full, boxes must be returned sealed to either your local surgery or to one of the pharmacies in Gloucestershire participating in the take back scheme.

In addition to the following list of pharmacies within Tewkesbury Borough, all pharmacies in Gloucestershire take back yellow sharps boxes so you may use a pharmacy within Gloucestershire that is outside of the borough.

Sharps and sharp boxes must not be disposed of in the general household rubbish or recycling bins. This poses a risk to the lives of collection and sorting staff. Nor can clinical waste be taken to the Household Recycling Centre.
