How is the Recycling Sorted?
The new recycling collections involve a state of the art technology called a Materials Recycling Facility - or MRF.
The mixed recycling is collected in the blue bin and taken to a MRF. At the MRF, all the mixed recycling is sorted and separated into different types of materials by machine and by hand before being sent to manufacturers who make it into new products.
The sorting technology consists of magnets, eddy current separators, lasers and air jets to name a few.
