Archive - Crackdown on illegal collections

Unlicensed door-to-door collections are on the increase and Tewkesbury Borough Council is warning residents to be on their guard.

There has been an increase in commercial companies using a charitable disguise to ask residents for clothes and items, which they then sell for profit.

Door-to-door collections can be an effective way for charities to raise funds but the public needs to be aware that there are bogus collectors working to make a profit.

Tewkesbury Borough Council's Lead Member for Community Development Cllr Whelan said:

"We don't want to stop people giving to genuine charities so our main message is to be generous, but also be wise.

"There are lots of safe ways to donate to charity, including giving money directly or giving unwanted items to charity shops."
