Bicycle Travel

If properly planned for, cycling and walking can reduce the demand for motorised transport and improve public health through providing exercise.

However, where cycling is not properly planned for, an increase in cycling can lead to a greater risk of injury from road accident.

In working to ensure that cycling can be a safe transport choice for residents in the area, Tewkesbury Borough Council is working with Gloucestershire County Council, Sustrans and other cycling interest groups to implement cycle route schemes and to ensure that when new development takes place that the needs of cyclists and pedestrians are taken fully into account in terms of road safety and the provision of secure cycle parking facilities.

They also collaborate on such schemes as safe routes to schools which seek to improve road safety for schoolchildren. Sustrans is a national organisation which works to promote cycling and walking and make it safer to do so. Its main project is an ambitious plan to create a national cycle network, further details of which can be found on the Sustrans website.
