Volunteer Litter Pickers
Tewkesbury Borough Council's volunteer litter picker scheme was set up in 2004. Since then we have successfully recruited over 120 members from all ages and backgrounds. The members share a passion for keeping the Borough tidy, but each has their own reasons for being out and about, armed with a pair of pickers and a red sack.
Many of the volunteers have been picking up litter near their homes for years, and joined the scheme to carry on their good work using equipment supplied by the Council. Others have taken up walking or exercising a dog, during which they have noticed untidy spots which they are keen to keep clean.
As part of the scheme, the Council provides a Hi-visibility jacket or waistcoat, protective gloves, litter pickers, a roll of red sacks and an insurance scheme in case of accident. We also provide an information pack with a newsletter, feedback form and a form to enrol a friend.
As the members of the scheme are out and about in the Borough frequently, they report important information back to the Council, such as heavy littering, instances of fly tipping and abandoned vehicles. With a Borough the size of 164 square miles, 120 volunteers each covering over a mile of footpaths and tracks is a good start in helping to keep the place clean. Many of the volunteers not only pick up litter but also recycle what they find, helping to keep to a minimum the amount of litter sent to landfill.
If you are interested in joining the scheme, please either fill in the online registration form or call 01684 272186.
